Louise - dotty about fitness

I was always a gym bunny, attending lots of classes, and one day our instructor didn’t turn up, so the class didn’t go ahead. It got me thinking that I could do it, as I’ve been to plenty of classes and knew roughly what it involved. I looked up the local courses, booked myself on, and worked hard to get qualified. I’ve never looked back and can honestly say I love it!

It’s every Sunday at 9.30 am on the green by the Thurrock Yacht Club and is suitable for all fitness levels and abilities. There’s no need to worry about not being fit enough, as I give alternatives and other options if needed. The atmosphere is brilliant, with lots of support and encouragement from the fitness crew. Each session is different but includes a mix of dynamic movements, including squats, sit-ups, press-ups, and the odd burpee, that will help improve your cardio and get you stronger and fitter. The main thing is that you will have fun!

I love squats. They are a great lower-body exercise, and with so many variations to choose from, there’s something for everyone. There are so many benefits to improving strength, mobility, flexibility, and overall lower body toning. I never get bored of doing squats in my workouts!

The key to exercising while having a busy schedule is to find little pockets of time throughout your day. Grab those 10 or 15 minutes and make the most of the time. Take advantage of moments like waiting for the kettle to boil by fitting in a quick set of squats or lunges. The key is to recognise that there are always opportunities for movement, no matter how tight your schedule may be.

My proudest achievement as a fitness instructor occurred during lockdown when I organised free Zoom classes for anyone interested in exercising. It was a great way to keep in touch with those who were part of the gym classes. A highlight of this experience was receiving a letter of recognition from my local mayor, having been nominated by those who had joined me for the online fitness sessions.

Finding the motivation to exercise can be challenging, but the key is to start small. Begin with a workout that you enjoy and for extra accountability, find a workout buddy. Taking that initial step can be challenging, but I can assure you that if you stick with it, you’ll catch the exercise bug, and you will be going back for more. I always like to see the Sunday morning fitness crew smiling at the end of the session.

I enjoy how the relationships have grown and that everyone supports each other and gives advice, whether it is business-related or personal. I value everyone’s opinion in the group and trust them all.

My networking tip is to be a good listener. Actively listen to what others say during networking events. This not only shows respect but also allows you to understand their needs and how you might be able to provide value.
